MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo Athletic Department announced today (Sept. 28) that men's tennis will rejoin the Falcon athletic family beginning in the fall of 2010. With the addition of men's tennis, Montevallo now offers 12 varsity sports.
Women's tennis head coach Steve Faulkner will assume the new role as head coach of both men's and women's tennis.
"I look forward to the opportunity and challenges of the reintroduction of men's tennis to UM athletics in 2010," said coach Faulkner. "UM has had a rich men's tennis tradition winning team championships in 1964, 1966, and 1970 and has had a multitude of talented athletes come through the ranks. It will be exciting to begin the process next fall of returning to that elite level in the future."
Men's tennis made its debut at Montevallo in 1959. The University fielded a team for 22 years before discontinuing the sport at the end of the 1980 season. Men's tennis will be the sixth men's sport at Montevallo.
Montevallo will become the 11th Peach Belt Conference school to sponsor men's tennis joining Armstrong Atlantic State University, Augusta State University, Columbus State University, Flagler College, Francis Marion University, Georgia College and State University, Georgia Southwestern State University, Lander University, North Georgia College and State University and USC-Aiken.
