LARRY ADAMS
Men's Golf
1989 UM Hall of Fame inductee, Larry Adams, what exemplified what
effect an impact player can have on a program. In his two year
stint at Montevallo, Adams led the UM squad to their first-ever
NAIA District 27 and Southern States Conference golf Championships
in 1980 and 1981. Adams also earned Most Valuable Player honors
during those two years.
In 1980, an Adams-led squad made its first-ever NAIA National Tournament appearance, placing eighth. Montevallo finished tenth in 1981, the second of three straight national tournament appearances. Adams also posted a UM record 73.7 season stroke average during the 1980-81 campaign.
MARGARET BLALOCK
Meritorious Service
1989 UM Hall of Fame inductee, Margaret Ann Blalock, died on October 16,1989 at the age of 54. Born in Warrior, Alabama, she earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Montevallo in 1957 and her master's and doctorate at the University of Alabama. She taught at the secondary school level and at the Birmingham YWCA before joining the faculty of her alma mater in 1966, where she taught for 23 years.
Probably her most notable accomplishment was the establishment of the women's athletic program at the University of Montevallo. She was also instrumental in the formation of the Alabama Women's intercollegiate Sports Association , an affiliate of the national organization, the Association of intercollegiate Athletics for Women.
In the early years of the University of Montevallo women's athletic program, Dr. Blalock led the volleyball team to the 1972 state championship, the runner-up position in the regional championship, and a trip to the national tournament in Provo, Utah. From 1972-1976, her teams finished in the state top three five times. She also guided the UM tennis team to a fourth place state finish in 1972.
BILLY COTTON
Meritorious Service
An early years participant in this institution's baseball program, 1989 UM Hall of Fame inductee, Billy Cotton has shown his appreciation to his alma mater in an extremely supportive fashion. Without question, he is the University of Montevallo Athletic Program's number one benefactor. Following a very generous gift in the fund drive to install lights at Kermit Johnson Field, he has continued to make annual contributions to the Um Falcon Club. His gifts to date total more than $100,000.
A graduate of Alabama College, Billy is now the Secretary-Treasurer of Cardner Mirror Corporation in North Wilkesboro, in North Carolina. His enormous contributions to the UM Athletic Program have been acknowledged by the naming of the baseball office/pressbox/concessions area in his honor.
GERALD DOUGLASS
Men's Basketball
1989 UM Hall of Fame inductee, Gerald Douglass, completed his collegiate career with a long list of impressive credentials. Douglas left Montevallo as the most decorated player in UM men's basketball history. After his final season, Douglass held ten school records, including 1.860 career points. His 791 career field goals and 1,636 career field goal attempts are still Montevallo records.
Douglass, a four-year letterman, earned All-Southern States Conference honors each of his last three seasons. He was also a three-time UM Most Valuable Player, regarded as a complete player on both ends of the court. Known mostly as a tenacious rebounder in his early years. Douglass led the Falcons in scoring and rebounding his last two seasons, during which he earned 2nd team All-American status.
