SHEENA BOWLING
Women's Basketball

2002 UM Hall of Fame Inductee Sheena Bowling concluded her career as one of the most decorated student-athletes to ever compete at the University of Montevallo. A four-time NAIA All-American, Bowling owns 21 single-season and career scoring and rebounding records at UM. The Springfield, Tennessee native averaged 25.6 points and 11 rebounds in her career, and finished with 3,259 points, 1,500 more than the next closest player. At the conclusion of her career, she was one of only nine women in the history of women's basketball to score over 3,000 points in a career. She was a part of a team that posted a .795 (101-26) winning percentage in her four years at UM and appeared in four consecutive NAIA National Tournaments. She was also twice named College Sport Magazine Player of the Year, twice named NAIA All-Southeast Region, twice named Southern States Conference Player of the Year, and was selected to the Kodak All-American team as a sophomore. She still owns the NAIA all-time career record in field goal percentage (.675) and has the all-time NAIA record with 25 consecutive field goals made during the 1995-96 season. Bowling graduated from Montevallo in 1997.


BRIJIN HALES
Volleyball

2002 UM Hall of Fame Inductee Brijin Hales was a key member of one of the most successful series of women's volleyball teams at UM. A four-year starter, Hales is fourth in career kills with 1,478 and is among the all-time leaders in several career and single-season categories. She is fourth all-time in total kills, sixth all-time in hitting percentage and third all-time in games played. Along with teammates and UM Hall of Fame members Gretchen Koppersmith and Carla-Sester Ragland, Hales was a part of a team that finished with an amazing .873 (173-25) winning percentage in her four years at UM. Hales was a Second Team NAIA All-American as a senior, and a Honorable Mention NAIA All-American selection her junior season. She was also a part of a successful Falcon volleyball team that concluded a string of 14 consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances at the 1995 NAIA National Tournament in San Diego, Calif.

A 1996 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Hales received her master of arts in teaching with an English emphasis from the University of West Alabama, and has taught and coached at Franklin Central High School in Indianapolis, Ind. She is currently the head of the English department and coaches volleyball at the International School of Aruba.

 

NORM TUMS
Men's Golf

2002 UM Hall of Fame Inductee Norm Tums played four years for the University's Men's Golf Program from 1978-81. During his career, he received medialist honors at six tournaments. Tums was a four-time All-Southern States Conference selection and was named to the All-District team three times. He participated in two NAIA National Tournaments, narrowly missing All-American status by one stroke. Tums was Team MVP in 1979 and was named to the All-Tournament team in five invitational tournaments. A 1982 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Tums is the highly respected golf professional at the Emerald Bay Golf Course in Destin, Fla.


DR. ROBERT M. MC CHESNEY
Meritorious Service

2002 UM Hall of Fame Inductee Dr. Robert M. McChesney was named the 13th president of the University of Montevallo in July 1992. Dr. McChesney has been a longtime and vocal supporter of the University of Montevallo men's and women's athletic programs and was one of the driving forces for guiding the Falcons and Lady Falcons from the NAIA to the NCAA Division II. Born in Effingham, Illinois, he graduated with highest honors from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, majoring in history/political science. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, Woodrow Wilson Department of Government and Foreign Affairs. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Chi, and Golden Key. He is a past Chairman of the Alabama Council of College and University Presidents and of the Partnership Advisory Council of the Higher Education Partnership. He has served as the Commissioner from Alabama on the Executive Council of the Commission on Colleges, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. He is inducted into the 2002 University of Montevallo Athletic Hall of Fame for meritorious service.
