Selection Process
A selection committee will meet as needed to consider nominations for induction into the University of Montevallo Athletic Hall of Fame. The committee should consist of individuals from the University community with a knowledge and interest in intercollegiate athletics. The committee will have a permament status within the athletic department in order to offset any details regarding future classes. Committee members will include a diverse cross-section of University personnel, under the direction of the University of Montevallo Athletic Director, or his/her appointed designee.
The composition of the committee should include:
- Director of Athletics or appointed designee
- Representative of Hall of Fame member
- Alumni Office Board member
- Representative of the Intercollegiate Athletic Committee
- Faculty representative
- University Staff representative
- Active head coach
- Two (2) "At-large" representatives
Criteria for Selection:
1. Individuals to be considered on the basis of undergraduate athletic achievement must:
a. have a nomination submitted on their behalf detailing their athletic accomplishment.
b. have waited five (5) years since completion of their athletic eligibility
c. have participated for a minimum of two (2) years on at least one varsity team, and
d. have represented UM in a positive fashion both as an undergraduate and as an alumnus.
2. Coaches, administrators and special supporters of the University of Montevallo athletics are also eligible for induction into the Hall of Fame, if they:
a. have a nomination submitted on their behalf detailing the special nature of their contributions to
Montevallo athletics and
b. have conducted themselves in a fashion such as to bring credit to Montevallo athletics
for a minimum of five (5) years.
3. Respected University of Montevallo alumni who bring favor to their alma mater by achieving success in their area relating to athletics as alumni are eligible for induction consideration five years after their graduation, providing that the selection committee receives appropriate nominations detailing the candidate's achievements as alumni.
4. Deceased contributors to the University of Montevallo are also eligible to be inducted posthumously into the Athletic Hall of Fame
5. Persons currently coaching or currently on staff at the University of Montevallo will not be considered for induction if the primary rationale revolves around their coaching accomplishments or staff achievements while at UM.
6. An athletic team shall be eligible for induction as a unit. The induction of the team shall not prohibit the separate induction of one or more of its members, If a team is inducted, the Hall of Fame committee shall select a representative to accept the award.
All individuals selected for the UM Athletic Hall of Fame must be present to accept the award, unless mitigating circumstances precludes personal acceptance of the award.
Nomination/Selection Timeframe
An on-line nomination form for the University of Montevallo Athletic Hall of Fame will be placed on the Athletic Department website, www.montevallofalcons.com. This form will provide space for name, sport(s) played (if any), year of graduation (if applicable) and detailed documented material in support of the nomination.
A representative of the University, who will serve as recording secretary for the University of Montevallo Athletic Hall of Fame will receive nominations for consideration under the above listed categories. The deadline for submissions is April 1. The HOF committee chair will then forward the list of nominations to the committee for review within ten (10) days of the the deadline. The committee shall vote no later than the second week of May.
The committee will review all submitted nominations and discuss the selection of at least one (1) but no more than four (4) individuals for induction. Selected individuals will be placed on a ballot to be voted into the Hall of Fame. Individuals not selected may be considered for future induction, however must be re-nominated for consideration.
To be eligible to vote, each member of the nomination/selection committee must be in good standing and will have one vote on the ballot. The vote will be accomplished by secret ballot. To be elected a nominee must receive a number of votes of at least 75 percent of the committee members voting. In the event of a tie, there shall be a revote for nominees involved with the tie until the tie is broken.
When voting is complete and a Hall of Fame nominating class is named, the Athletic Director (or his/her designee) will notify each prospective inductee (via formal communication) of their induction to the University of Montevallo Athletic Hall of Fame. The communication will specify the date and time of the induction ceremony. Each inductee shall receive an individual Hall of Fame plaque commemorating their selection. A plaque identical to that awarded shall be displayed in the Athletic Hall of Fame at a location determined by the Director of Athletics and the University of Montevallo.
Hall of Fame Ceremony:
The ceremony shall be in the nature of a program/reception or banquet appropriate to the dignity and prestige of the occasion. Prospective inductees and their spouses/dates shall be invited as paid attendees. An invitation shall be sent to all previous inductees together with such other individuals that the Athletic Director (and or designee) deems appropriate. An appropriate press release will be prepared for publication on the day following the induction ceremony. The release is be produced by the Sports Information Director.
Amendments:
Criteria for selection may be amended periodically by a majority vote of the committee members. Committee members may serve more than one year at the discretion of the Director of Athletics.
