Dinner is Served: Baseball Seniors Give Back at Jimmie Hale Mission

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Head coach John Jarnagin and 12 University of Montevallo senior baseball players took some time to give back to the community on February 4th at the Jimmie Hale Mission. Founded in 1944, the Jimmie Hale Mission is a shelter for homeless, hungry and hurting men. Not only does the mission focus on helping young men with their physical needs, but also their spiritual needs.

The Shepura Men's Center inspires hope for a new beginning for men of all ages on the wrong path in life, acting as a stepping stone to recovery through a 12-step bible based program, individual counseling, group bible study, work therapy, educational remediation and career readiness, and of course, a place to stay.

The University of Montevallo baseball seniors plated the food and served dinner to the centers 125 residents and 50 off the street guests.

"It was a great experience for our guys to see what the other side looks like because in reality we are all only one meal away from that same position," said coach Jarnagin. "I really enjoyed watching our guys interact with the residents and guests and to hear their stories, it was an eye-opening opportunity for them, and I hope we can do it again sometime."

The Jimmie Hale Mission has many opportunities for volunteers to help at any of their five centers:

Jessie's Place ~ an intermediate shelter for women and children
Royal Pines Center ~ a rural recovery program for men
Mission Possible Bargain Centers ~ fundraising thrift stores
Stewart Learning Centers ~ educational remediation and employment facilities
Shepura Men Center ~ shelter, dining hall, clothing distribution, chapel services, recovery center and educational remediation and career readiness campus.
