Sixty-Five Montevallo Student-Athletes Named to 2009-10 Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo athletic department had 65 student-athletes named to the 2009-10 Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll. Men’s soccer led all Montevallo teams with 13 members being named to the list. The Presidential Honor Roll recognizes all student-athletes at the 13 PBC member institutions who had a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the academic year.

UM Spends a Day in the Sun with Local Fifth Graders
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – On Thursday April 15 the University of Montevallo Athletic Department joined forces with Montevallo Connection to give 110 fifth graders an experience of higher education and collegiate athletics at the University of Montevallo. Something they will never forget! The purpose of the Montevallo Connection is to re-energize and further strengthen the partnership between the University of Montevallo faculty and the faculty in the Montevallo schools. The Montevallo Connection is dedicated to cultural, educational, athletic and professional exchanges that will enhance the educational experiences of both students in the Montevallo public schools and those at the University of Montevallo.

Men’s Basketball and SAAC Donate Time and Effort to Habitat for Humanity
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team donated their time and a helping hand to the Greater Birmingham Habitat for Humanity program on Saturday March 27th. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit Christian housing ministry that revitalizes existing homes, but most importantly builds quality, affordable houses for those in need. Their central aim is to encourage family stability and promote self-sufficiency, while endorsing educational achievement and responsible citizenship.

Falcons Sensational Season Ends in Sweet Sixteen Loss, 79-71
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (25-8) ended its postseason run with a 79-71 loss in the Sweet Sixteen to Augusta State University (29-3). The Falcons gave the Jaguars everything they could handle but a 22-7 advantage on the free throw line gave the Jags an eight-point win. The Falcons were led by All-Tournament performers Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) and Mark Plaza (San Diego, Calif./Chula Vista) who combined for 43 of the Falcons 71 points. Little had 23 points while hitting five three-pointers. Plaza had 20 points and seven assists.

Falcons Advance to Their Fifth NCAA Regional Final
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (25-7) used a 88-71 win over USC Aiken (20-11) to advance to their fifth NCAA Regional Final in as many tries. This is the fifth regional final under current head coach Danny Young in just seven seasons. The Falcons will take on the winner of the Augusta State and Anderson game on Tuesday, March 16 at 7 p.m. (EST).

Falcons Fall in Peach Belt Conference Tournament Final, 65-60
AIKEN, S.C. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (23-7) dropped a hard-fought Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship game to USC Aiken (19-10) on the Pacers home court, 65-60. The Falcons were led by All-Tournament team members Freddy Little and Tauras Dortch. Little led all scorers with 20 points while Dortch had 10.

Falcons Shock No. 1 Augusta State, 81-77
AIKEN, S.C. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (23-6) took on the top-ranked team in the country in the semifinals of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament this evening (March 6) and came away with a 81-77 victory. The win avenges an earlier season loss to Augusta State University (26-3) on national television. The Falcons will now take on the winner of USC Aiken and Clayton State in the championship game tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. (EST).

Little Named First Team All-Conference
AIKEN, S.C. – Senior Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) of the University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (22-6) was named First Team All-Peach Belt Conference for the 2009-10 season. This is Little’s second All-Conference award after he was named First Team All-Gulf South Conference last season. This is the first PBC All-Conference award for the men’s basketball program.

Falcons Never Trail in Quarterfinal Win, 88-79
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (22-6) never trailed in its Peach Belt Conference Tournament game with North Georgia College and State University (15-13) on Wednesday night (3/3). The Falcons jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they won 88-79 to advance to the semifinals against No. 1 ranked Augusta State University on Saturday night at 5 p.m. (CST). The two teams will travel to Aiken, S.C. for the final four match-up.

UM to Host PBC Tournament Tailgate
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The UM Athletic Department will be hosting a pregame tailgate party outside the McChesney Student Activity Center tomorrow March 3rd at 5:30 pm. There will be FREE Full Moon Barbeque provided by the Alabaster location. Each attendee will receive a barbeque sandwich, chips and a cookie. Live music will be provided by local band Waiting on Tyler. They will perform during the pregame festivities as well as half time of the game. The University of Montevallo will take on North Georgia College and State University in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament at 7 pm. Admission is free to Peach Belt Conference school students with valid school id. General admission tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children.

Falcons Dominate Columbus State to Secure Second Seed in PBC Tournament, 82-63
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Coming into today’s game the University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (21-6, 11-6 PBC) knew it needed to win and needed North Georgia College and State University to lose in order for the Falcons to host the first round game of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament. With that in mind the Falcons went out and dominated Columbus State University (12-14, 6-11 PBC), 82-63. The Saints of NGCSU lost to GCSU which gave the Falcons the number two seed and UM will now host NGCSU on Wednesday, March 3 at 7 p.m. in the first round of the PBC Tournament.

Falcons Fall to No. 17 Georgia College, 73-65
MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (20-6, 10-6 PBC) dropped a back-and-forth contest with 17th-ranked Georgia College and State University (21-4, 14-2 PBC), 73-65. Senior Mark Plaza (San Diego, Calif./Chula Vista) set another UM milestone as he passed Jamil Jerman (2004-06) for the career record in assists at UM during the NCAA era. Plaza dished out five assists in the game to give him 267 for his career which is two more than Jerman had during his two seasons at Montevallo. The Falcons were led in scoring by senior Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) who had 22 points while hitting five shots from three-point range.

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (20-5, 10-5 PBC) ended its two-game skid with a 77-68 win over Clayton State University (14-11, 7-8 PBC). The Falcons were led by junior Tauras Dortch (Ensley, Ala./Ramsay) who had a huge double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. He led the team in rebounds, assists and steals and was second in points. Senior Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) scored 17 points to lead the team in scoring.

Falcons Suffer Late Scoring Drought on the Road
DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (19-5, 9-5 PBC) once again suffered a late game scoring drought this time against North Georgia College and State University (13-10, 8-5 PBC). The Falcons led 70-58 with 9:28 left in the game but went scoreless for the next 7:33 and scored just three points down the stretch as they fell 76-73.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (19-4, 9-4 PBC) scored just three points in the final 12:44 against seventh-ranked Augusta State University (22-2, 14-1 PBC) and fell 61-40. UM cut the Jaguars lead to just one with 12:44 left in the second half and then suffered one of its worst droughts in recent memory as they hit just one field goal and one free throw the rest of the game. The Falcons were led by junior Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech) who scored 10 points and grabbed eight boards.

Little Lifts Falcons to Overtime Victory, 82-76
AIKEN, S.C. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (19-3, 9-3 PBC) remained undefeated on the road with an 82-76 overtime victory over USC Aiken (13-8, 8-6 PBC). Senior Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) who did not score a basket until 7:47 mark of the second half led the Falcons in scoring with 17 points including six in the overtime period.

Falcons Use Strong Second Half to Down Hurricanes, 62-58
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (18-3, 8-3 PBC) came back from a three-point halftime deficit to defeat the visiting Hurricanes of Georgia Southwestern State University (5-16, 1-10 PBC), 62-58. UM senior Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside) had two blocks in the game which tied him for the single-season record at Montevallo since UM joined the NCAA in 1996. January now has 45 blocks on the season which is tied with Darron Robinson (2006-07) who had 45 blocks during the 2006-07 season.

Falcons Roll to Victory, 92-86
COLUMBUS, Ga. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (17-3, 7-3 PBC) remained undefeated on the road with a 92-86 victory over Columbus State University (10-9, 4-6 PBC). The Falcons starting five dominated in the win picking up 78 of UM’s 92 points. Senior Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) and junior Tauras Dortch (Ensley, Ala./Ramsay) combined for nine three-pointers as they torched the Cougars from outside. Junior Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech) and Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside) dominated in the paint scoring 29 points combined while senior Mark Plaza (San Diego, Calif./Chula Vista) dished out the assists with 11.

The Falcons were led by senior Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside) who had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He also threw in a pair of blocks. Senior Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) was the top Falcon scorer with 21 points including a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe.

Falcons’ Explosive Second Half Downs Braves, 75-57
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The 24th-ranked University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (16-2, 6-2 PBC) used a 51-point second half to down the visiting Braves from UNC Pembroke (6-13, 2-8 PBC) 75-57. The Falcons trailed 27-24 at halftime but outscored the Braves 51-30 in the second half to capture the victory. The big men for Montevallo dominated the paint as Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside) and Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech) combined for 39 of the Falcons 75 points. January had 20 points and nine boards while Coleman had 19 points and eight boards.

The Falcons gave up 20 turnovers compared to GCSU’s eight and shot just 21.4 percent from three-point range in the contest.

Young Picks Up 200th Career Victory with 74-60 Win over Clayton State
MORROW, Ga. – Head coach Danny Young of the 18th-ranked University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (15-1, 5-1 PBC) picked up his 200th career victory with a 74-60 win on the road at Clayton State University (9-7, 2-4 PBC). Young now has a career record of 200 wins and just 71 losses. He has coached six of his eight teams to 23-plus win seasons and has had only two losing seasons in his eight-year career.

The Falcons were once again led by their big men inside as junior Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech) scored a season-high 20 points after hitting 7-of-9 shots from the floor and 6-of-9 from the charity stripe. Reigning Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside) had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The No. 13 University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (13-1, 3-1) returned to its winning ways with a hard-fought 72-66 victory on the road at Flagler College (6-6, 2-2 PBC). The Falcons were once again led by the power duo of Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech) and Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside) who for the second game in a row posted a pair of double-doubles. Coleman had 15 points and 10 rebounds while January had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Coleman hit 6-of-7 shots from the floor while January connected on 4-of-7.

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 13 University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (12-1, 2-1) suffered its first loss of the season as two starters sat out due to injury. The Falcons fell to visiting North Georgia College and State University (7-6, 2-1 PBC) 68-67 to end their 12-game winning streak. UM had a pair of double-doubles from senior Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside) and junior Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech) in the loss. January had 20 points and 11 rebounds while Coleman chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds.

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 19 University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (11-0, 1-0 PBC) set a school record and recorded the first ever Peach Belt Conference win in program history with a 74-58 victory at home against Lander University (5-5, 0-2 PBC). The 2009-10 Falcons surpassed the 2005-06 team which started 10-0 and finished 29-5. UM was led in the victory by junior Tauras Dortch (Ensley, Ala./Ramsay) who had a game-high 19 points and five rebounds.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The No. 20 University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (10-0) tied the record for the best start in school history with their tenth win without a defeat. The only other Montevallo team to start on such a hot streak was the 2005-06 team which finished 29-5. The Falcons defeated the University of West Florida (4-6) for the second time this season. This time UM had to go into overtime to take down the Argonauts 74-68. The Falcons were led by senior Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) who had a game-high 24 points along with five rebounds and four assists.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (9-0) moved up to No. 20 in the most recent National Association of Basketball Coaches NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Rankings. The Falcons are off to their best start since the 2005-06 season when they began 10-0. UM is one of just two Peach Belt Conference teams ranked in the most recent poll. Fellow PBC member Augusta State University is ranked third with a record of 7-0.

The Falcons controlled the paint out-scoring the Golden Bears 46-8 in the paint. UM’s frontcourt was led by senior Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside) and junior Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech) who each scored 15 points in the win.

The Falcons were led by sophomore Ryan Westbrooks (Nashville, Tenn./Hillsboro) who scored a career-high 20 points as he hit six three-pointers.

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (7-0) used an explosive first half to put away the visiting Shaw University Bears (4-2), 99-89. The Falcons held a double-digit lead for all but three minutes of the game as they out-scored the Bears 55-28 in the first half. Two Falcons had standout performances as junior Tauras Dortch (Ensley, Ala./Ramsay) and senior Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) each scored over 20 points.

Falcons Survive Battle of the Unbeatens, 63-56
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (6-0) improved its record to 6-0 with a hard-fought victory over previously undefeated Eckerd College (4-1), 63-56. The Falcons were led by junior Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech) in the post and redshirt freshman Jonas Brown (Tifton, Ga./Tift County) on the perimeter. Both Falcons contributed a team-high 13 points to the win. Brown had a breakout game as he scored a career-high off 5-of-6 shooting. He was 3-of-4 from three point range and came up with a huge steal to seal the victory late in the game.

Undefeated Falcons Dominate Concordia-Selma, 100-67
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (5-0) moved its record to 5-0 as they dominated visiting Concordia College-Selma, 100-67. The Falcons had all but two of their 15 players score and had all 15 see the floor for at least four minutes of action. UM was led by junior guard Tauras Dortch (Ensley, Ala./Ramsay) who scored 19 points, picked up five steals and dished out four assists.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – Senior Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside) and junior Cecil Coleman (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Bay Tech) of the University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (4-0) were named to the University of West Florida Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament Team this past weekend. January was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. The pair helped lead the Falcons to two wins over Lynn University and the University of West Florida.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (4-0) continued its win streak with a victory in the final game of University of West Florida Thanksgiving Classic against host UWF (2-3). The Falcons defeated the Argonauts 94-72 as they used a strong transition game to gain a 34-6 advantage in points off turnovers. UM was led by seniors Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) and Gerald January (Macon, Ga./Westside). Little led the team in points with 20 while January had a huge double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (3-0) remained undefeated after coming from behind in the second half at the University of West Florida Thanksgiving Classic against Lynn University (1-3). The Falcons defeated the Knights 65-62 despite trailing 36-31 at halftime. UM was led junior Tauras Dortch (Ensley, Ala./Ramsay) who scored a career-high 25 points off 11-of-13 shooting from the floor.

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team (1-0) opened up the season with a dominating 107-79 win at home over Southeastern Bible College (0-3). The Falcons had eight scorers in double figures and had all 13 players in the game score at least one point. The Falcons were led in scoring by senior Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) who had 14 points to go along with five assists. Senior Mark Plaza (San Diego, Calif./Chula Vista) dished out a game-high 10 assists while scoring eight points as well.

Falcons Open up Exhibition Season in Tuscaloosa
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team traveled west to Tuscaloosa to take on the University of Alabama in an exhibition contest. The Falcons fell 81-53 to a talented Crimson Tide team. UM was led by senior guard Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) who scored a team-high 17 points while hitting 4-of-7 three point attempts.

Little Named to PBC Preseason All-Conference Team
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Senior guard Freddy Little (Raleigh, N.C./Bunn) of the University of Montevallo men’s basketball team was named to the Peach Belt Conference Preseason All-Conference Team as selected by the coaches. He becomes the first Montevallo men’s basketball player to earn an honor from the PBC.

Falcons Announce 2009-10 Schedule
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men’s basketball team released its 2009-10 schedule which features five games against NCAA Division II Tournament participants, one nationally televised game, four games against teams ranked in the top-25 of the final 2008-09 NABC Division II Coaches Poll and to top it off an exhibition with the University of Alabama inside Coleman Coliseum.
