No. 17 Francis Marion Downs Falcons, 91-68

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's basketball team (10-9, 3-6 PBC) fell to 17th-ranked Francis Marion University (17-2, 9-1 PBC) 91-68. The Falcons were led by junior Carrie Parrott (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel) who scored 19 points and had two blocks. Senior Alex Sanabria (Miami, Fla./Miami) was the only other Falcon in double-digits with 10 points.

Senior Alicia Lewis (Youngsville, La./Comeaux) had nine points and four assists while Manal Cali (Northampton, England/Northampton School for Girls) added seven points and a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Shan Jones (Hartselle, Ala./Hartselle) had seven points and six boards. Tiaren Young (Forestdale, Ala./Minor) add six points, six boards, three steals and a pair of assists.

FMU out-rebounded the Falcons 59-36 and grabbed 28 offensive boards which led to 23 second chance points.

The Patriots opened the game on an 8-2 run but the Falcons quickly cut that lead to just one at 11-10. The UM comeback sparked a 14-1 run by the Patriots that opened up their first double-digit lead of the game. Once the Patriots were up 25-11 the two teams began to trade baskets which lasted the rest of the half. The period ended with FMU ahead 38-24.

The second half started like the first ended with both teams trading baskets. With 17:51 remaining the Patriots began a 9-1 run that opened their lead to 22. Two possessions later FMU junior Shannon Singleton-Bates scored her 1,000th career point on a fastbreak lay-up assisted by Robin Colbert.

UM was able to cut the Patriots lead to just 17 with 12:31 left but once again the Falcons comeback sparked a 20-6 run by FMU which extended their lead to 31. The Falcons will would not be broken as they immediately began their own 16-4 run which cut the Patriots lead back to just 19. That would be as close as the Falcons would get as FMU continued to build its lead the final four minutes ending the game up 91-68.

The Falcons return to action this Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. as they travel to Columbus State for a key Peach Belt Conference contest. The Cougars are 11-8 overall and 5-4 in the conference.
