Falcons Second Half Surge Leads to Victory over Lady Jags, 65-50

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The University of Montevallo women's basketball team (12-11, 5-8 PBC) used a 31-8 run to open up the second half and pull away from host Augusta State University (1-23, 0-15 PBC). UM took down the Lady Jaguars 65-50 and were led by junior Shan Jones (Hartselle, Ala./Hartselle) who was a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor and 2-for-2 from three-point range while scoring a game-high 18 points. She also chipped in six rebounds including five offensive.
Junior Carrie Parrott (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel) had 12 points and seven boards while senior Alicia Lewis (Youngsville, La./Comeaux) scored 11. Senior Manal Cali (Northampton, England/Northampton School for Girls) scored eight points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Junior Tiaren Young (Forestdale, Ala./Minor) scored seven points while freshman Trena Moore-Smith (Charlotte, N.C./West Charlotte) led the team in assists with seven.
The Falcons outscored the Lady Jags 32-16 in the paint. UM shot 47.1 percent from the field while holding ASU to 33.3 percent.
UM opened up the game outscoring the Lady Jags 19-6 in the opening 10 minutes. With 4:55 left and the Falcons up 25-15 the Lady Jags went on a 12-2 run to tie the game with 12 seconds left on the clock. A pair of free throws by Cali with .3 seconds left on the clock gave the Falcons a 29-27 lead heading into halftime.
UM opened the second half on fire and with a stifling defense as they outscored the Lady Jags 31-8 in the opening 14 minutes. As they half wound down the Jags used a 12-2 run to close out the game and cut the Falcons lead to 15.
The Falcons will return to action this Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 4:30 p.m. UM travels to North Georgia in a key Peach Belt Conference Western Division match-up.
