46 Montevallo Student-Athletes Named to GSC Fall Academic Honor Roll

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo athletic department was tops among non-football schools in the Gulf South Conference with 46 student-athletes named to the Gulf South Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll. The Falcons were second only to Harding University who had 25 football athletes and eight men's cross country athletes to push past the Falcons. The Falcons also had eight student-athletes named to their respective All-Academic Teams.
Without football and men's cross country counted the Falcons hold a commanding lead over the other GSC schools with 46 compared to 38 from Harding, 33 from the University of West Florida and 33 from Christian Brothers University.
UM was led by women's soccer who had 17 student-athletes named to the honor roll followed by men's soccer with 13, volleyball with 11 and women's cross country with five.
Senior men's soccer forward Jonathan Maloney (West Yorkshire, England) was a unanimous selection for the Men's Soccer All-Academic Squad. He was joined by fellow Falcons sophomore Milan Pualic (Subotica, Serbia) and senior Jim Witherow (Huntsville, Alabama). Witherow was named to the 2007 Men's Soccer All-Academic Squad as well.
Senior Corey Gros (Victoria, British Columbia) led the women's soccer squad with her third-straight selection to the GSC Women's Soccer All-Academic Squad. She was joined on the team by senior Adele Jackson (Lincolnshire, England) and junior Brittany Correia (Birmingham, Alabama).
Seniors Lauren Tortorici (Birmingham, Alabama) and Monika Tortorici (Birmingham, Alabama) led the way on the volleyball squad as Lauren made her second-straight selection and Monika made it three-in-a-row.
Academic All-GSC Teams are selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors (SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominees must have an overall grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career and may not be freshmen or first-semester or quarter transfers. The student-athlete must be a significant contributor to the squad. Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.
To be named to the GSC Honor Roll a student-athlete must have a GPA of 3.00 or above. The athlete must have participated in one regular season contest to be named to the honor roll as well.
