Montevallo, Ala. – Three members of the University of Montevallo women's lacrosse team have participated in international competition around the globe this summer.
Junior
Caleigh Spoon and sophomore
Hailey Wilcox competed for Student Athlete World Team USA at the Lisboa Lacrosse Cup in Lisbon, Portugal.
Spoon and Wilcox competed against nine other clubs from around the world, including seven different countries.
Student Athlete World is a club lacrosse team in the United States comprised of individuals across the nation competing at the collegiate level.
SWA finished the tournament 5-0 and in first place after defeating Munchen Lacrosse of Germany 8-3 in the finals.
"We played to the best of our ability and really utilized the things we were good at to get the job done," said Spoon. "It was all around a really amazing experience."
Sophomore,
Anja Kuys also participated in international competition this summer as well, playing for the New Zealand U-23 national team.
Kuys traveled to Gyeongju, South Korea to compete in the 2019 Asia Pacific Lacrosse Championships with New Zealand.
The championships featured the women's national teams from China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and New Zealand.
New Zealand finished 4-2 overall in the tournament, defeating Hong Kong 9-6 in the third place game.
"We were pleased with this result as we were playing against national women's teams," said Kuys. "I thought I played well defensively and scored some key goals."
Kuys was named Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week last season for the Falcons while leading the team in scoring with 27 goals.
