MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo Athletics has named Men's Basketball's
Derek Moore and Women's Basketball's
Elyse Hughes as the Montevallo Players of the Week presented by Jack's for the week of Dec. 1.
Derek Moore (Men's Basketball)
Senior forward
Derek Moore delivered another dominant week for the Falcons, powering Montevallo to back-to-back home victories and cementing himself as one of the Gulf South Conference's most efficient scorers. Across two games, Moore averaged 22.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and shot an exceptional 78.3 percent from the field, helping guide the Falcons to a 2-0 week and a 3-2 overall record.
Moore opened the week with a statement performance in Monday's 94-70 win over Fisk, with a season-high 26 points on 10-of-13 shooting while securing 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Moore added a three-pointer, five made free throws, and a pair of steals to lead a Montevallo offense that scored 40 points in the paint and capitalized on 21 Fisk turnovers.
On Wednesday, Moore kept up his dominant form in a 90-68 win over Spring Hill, scoring 19 points on a near-perfect 8-of-9 shooting, including another three-pointer. He added five rebounds, seven steals, and a block while anchoring a defensive effort that forced 24 turnovers and held the Badgers to 40 percent shooting. Moore scored six of the Falcons' first 10 points and continued to set the pace throughout the night as Montevallo cruised to its second straight victory.
Across the two-game stretch, Moore shot a blistering 70.6 percent from the floor, recorded 29 total rebounds, and averaged 19.4 points per game on the season.
Elyse Hughes (Women's Basketball)
Senior forward
Elyse Hughes delivered her strongest week of the young season. Hughes averaged 10.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and shot an impressive 56.3 percent from the field across the two games.
Hughes posted seven rebounds and played a key defensive role in Monday's matchup against Talladega, contributing a crucial second-half basket that tied the game early in the third quarter. She pulled down four offensive rebounds and generated multiple second-chance opportunities.
Hughes followed with the best performance of her season in Saturday's 67-47 win over Shorter, scoring a season-high 18 points on an outstanding 9-of-11 shooting while adding nine rebounds. Hughes was unstoppable around the rim, scoring eight points during Montevallo's fourth-quarter surge and helping the Falcons shoot a season-best 50 percent from the floor. Hughes' interior presence ignited multiple runs, including the 8-0 burst early in the fourth that put Montevallo ahead by double digits for good.
Through four games, Hughes is averaging 12.0 points and 6.8 rebounds, emerging as one of Montevallo's most reliable two-way contributors heading into conference play.
