MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Montevallo men's soccer team ended a tightly contested match against in-state foe West Alabama with a 2-1 victory, Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field. With the win the Falcons advance to 10-2-1 with a 6-2 GSC record while the Tigers slip to 5-6 with a 3-3 conference record.
"The sign of a good team is winning when you are not at your best," said head coach
Bruce Dietterle. "The soccer gods were on our side today. Give my guys credit though. They played through the mess and put our chances away."
The day began with a ceremony to honor seniors Cyprien N'Goma,
Edin Hernandez,
Kevin Menendez, and
Nemanja Acimovic for their contributions to the program in their time at UM. The Falcons started the match slightly sluggish, coming off the fatigue of Friday's game in Huntsville. Montevallo would begin to pick it up towards the end of the first half but neither team would manage to find a goal by halftime.
West Alabama only took 1:07 to score after halftime as Aymane El Ammari found the first score of the game for the Tigers. The Falcons were aggressive offensively but couldn't quite find the net, until
Sam Mitchell punched it in with 24 minutes left in the match. Montevallo scored the game winning goal off the left foot of
Edorta Cabieces Sanz, with an assist from Gabrielle Valerio.
The Falcons out-shot UWA 11-9 with four on goal shots compared to the Tiger's three. Both team had two corner kicks each during the match.
UP NEXT: The Falcons will travel to Cleveland, Tennessee for a match against Lee. Kick off is set for Friday, October 22 at 7:30 pm.
