UM starts season off with a bang, defeats Mars Hill 14-3 on the road

 
MARS HILL, NC. - The University of Montevallo women's lacrosse team opened its 2021 season with a dominant 14-3 win over non-conference foe Mars Hill University on Friday afternoon in North Carolina. Montevallo is starting their 11-game regular season with five non-conference games before Gulf South Conference play begins on March 21.
 
Anja Kuys scored the first goal of the season for the Falcons just 48 seconds into the contest coming off an assist from Janey Johnson. UM put in another goal just 20 seconds later, when Natalie Dicken found the back of the net on an unassisted effort.
 
Montevallo scored the first four goals of the game before MHU got on the scoreboard with 14:09 left in the first half. From there, UM's offense really turned it on and scored seven unanswered to give them an 11-1 lead at the half.
 
It was more of the same in the second half, as the Falcons' defense kept the game under control while the offense added three more goals. Eleanor Bruce netted two of her goals in the second half, scoring both on free position shots.
 
Kuys led the Falcons tonight with five goals on five shots, scoring four in the first half. Bruce netted four goals and led UM in shots with six. Johnson scored one goal to go along with two assists. Dicken chipped in one goal and one assist. Sadie Bopst, Brianna Shepler and Hannah Fortin also each added one goal. Jodi Morawiec contributed one assist.
 
Miranda Laird earned the win in goal for Montevallo, facing three shots and saving two.
 
UP NEXT: The Falcons will stay in North Carolina and visit Lenoir-Rhyne University on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 12 p.m.
