Montevallo men’s soccer season comes to an end at UWA, 1-0

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men's soccer team fell to the University of West Alabama 1-0 in the first round of the Gulf South Conference Spring Championship Series Tournament on Thursday evening. UM finishes the season with a record of 1-4 overall.
 
The Falcons pressured the Tigers early, earning two corner kicks in the opening five minutes, however, UM could not make anything of the opportunities.
 
Both teams had several opportunities in the first half, but neither squad was able to make anything of their chances. Goalkeeper Casey Jones had a standout performance in goal, recording 10 saves on the night to keep UM within striking distance the entire game.
 
UM kept pace with UWA in the first half, but the Tigers dominated the second half to win the game. West Alabama outshot the Falcons 10-3 in the second stanza. UWA scored the game's only goal on a header at the 61:54 mark.
 
Ruben Carvalho put a shot on goal in the game's last 30 seconds, but could not find the back of the net.
 
West Alabama outshot the Falcons 18-9. The Tigers put 11 shots on goal to Montevallo's four. UWA earned nine corner kicks while UM earned five.
 
Edin Hernandez led UM with three shots, two of which were on goal. Carvalho had two shots and put one on goal.
