Montevallo Defeats Midway 27-16 in Inaugural Home Wrestling Match

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo Wrestling team defeated Midway University, 27-16, in the program's inaugural home match.

 

In an electric environment of nearly 1,900 wrestling fans, the Falcons showed out in what was a historic moment in Montevallo's history.

 

Colt Brown started the match off with electricity for the Falcons as he defeated Midway's Andrew Vogler by tech fall, 19-3 in 5:45 for the program's first win inside Trustmark Arena.

 

With a forfeit in the 133 matchup, the Falcons took an early 11-0 lead over the visiting Eagles.

 

Midway rattled off three consecutive wins before Carson Freeman won by major decision over Jabril Williams in the 165 contest, 11-2.

 

In the 174, Derek Hussey pulled off a tightly contested win by decision, 5-3.

 

Jeffery Tubbs got the Falcon faithful going in the 184 bout with a pin in 1:26 over Michael Colligan.

 

Mark Pennison capped off the quartet of consecutive Falcon victories with a hard-fought win over David Emfinger, 15-13.

Individual Highlights 

 

·        Colt Brown improved to 10-4 on the year with his third tech fall of the season, 19-3 at 125.

·        Gabe Hixenbaugh won by forfeit in the 133 match to move to 7-0 on the season.

·        Carson Freeman added his first major decision win, 11-2, in the 165 match to improve to 8-4 overall.

·        Derek Hussey earned his team-leading 11th win of the season with a win by decision at 174, 5-3.

·        Jeffery Tubbs earned a pin victory in 1:26 at the 184 match for his third of the year. He is now 9-3 this season.

·        Mark Pennison added the final win for UM with his fifth of the year, by decision 15-13.

 

Team Highlights 

  • Montevallo won six-out-of-10 bouts in the dual and scored 27 total points.
  • The Falcons combined for one pin, one tech fall and one major decision in the match.

 

Up next, the Falcons will participate in the Life University open, on Saturday, Nov. 18, in Marietta, Georgia.
