NEWBERRY, S.C. – The University of Montevallo Wrestling earned its first dual win in program history, Wednesday, with a 32-15 win over Allen before splitting the road trip with a loss to No. 23 Newberry 31-14.
In just the second competition in program history, the Falcons picked up the program's first dual win in dominant fashion. Montevallo won seven-out-of-10 bouts and compiled two major decision victories and three pins.
Following the Allen win, UM took on No. 23 Newberry and battled with the Wolves, who were picked to finish second in Conference Carolinas, for most of the match. The Falcons earned wins in three weight classes with a tech fall, pin and a decision.
"I'm extremely proud of how our guys wrestled. It's incredible to start the season off 1-0 against Allen and get our first ever dual win," said Head Coach Daniel Ownbey. "Then to wrestle Newberry as tough as we did was a great sign. We have a great season ahead of us."
Freshman
Carson Freeman, a native of Alabaster, Alabama, and former Thompson standout Gabe Hixenbaugh were the only to Falcons to finish 2-0 on the evening.
Freeman topped Allen's Ya'Donnis Hardaway with a pin in 4:38 seconds to earn six points for his team before defeating Newberry's Asa Walton by decision 5-3 for three more points.
