MARS HILL, N.C. - The University of Montevallo women's lacrosse team defeated Mars Hill 14-7 in come-from-behind fashion on the road, Friday.
Anja Kuys opened with the game's first goal at the 4:33 mark in the first half, assisted by
Lily McCormick. Mars Hill scored five unanswered goals and took a 5-1 lead into halftime.
Montevallo's comeback began when
Jodi Morawiec found the back of the net, unassisted, less than a minute into the third period. Goals from Kuys and freshman
Mikaela Barbieri trimmed Mars Hill's lead to one, 5-4 at the 8:09 mark. The home side added three goals in a row to jump ahead 7-4, before Kuys scored her third goal of the game and Barbieri added her second on a free-position-shot to make it a 7-6 game at the end of the third.
Nearly three minutes into the fourth quarter,
Jodi Morawiec added another unassisted goal to even the score, 7-7.
Jenna Piazza gave UM its first lead since the first quarter, 8-7, when
Jenna Piazza netted a shot off a pass from Morawiec. Montevallo rattled off four more goals in the quarter and held Mar Hills without a score to win 14-7.
Despite being held to just one goal in the first quarter and none in the second, Montevallo outscored Mars Hill 13-2 in the second half – 5-2 in the third and 8-0 in the fourth.
The win is UM's first win on the road of the season as the team improves to 2-2 overall.
GAME NOTES
- Montevallo lost the turnover battle 24-27.
- Ground balls proved to be a huge advantage for the Falcons as they edged Mars Hill 35-33. Ashley Chen led UM with five.
- The Montevallo goalkeepers of Miranda Laird and Rachel Rose combined for seven saves and allowed just seven goals.
- Mikaela Barbieri and Anja Kuys each scored a team-high four goals and four points.
- Jodi Morawiec added four points with two goals and a team-high two assists.
