Falcons Slice Through Birmingham-Southern College 16-4

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - The University of Montevallo women's lacrosse team sliced through Birmingham-Southern College 16-4 on the road Wednesday.

An early goal put Birmingham Southern ahead 1-0, before the Falcons racked up nine straight goals. The onslaught of goals started with 10:21 left in the first period with an unassisted score from Lily Moats. Claire Withington got into the action, with an unassisted goal at the 8:14 mark. The first assisted goal for Montevallo came from Kiley Shea with the assist going to Lily McCormick. Chloe Norman and Jodi Moraweic both added goals to finish the first period, making the score 5-1.
 
In the start of the second the Falcons rattled off another three goals in the first three minutes. The three goals were scored by Withington, Mikaela Barbieri, and McCormick. Anja Kuys added one more score at the 8:48 mark, before Birmingham Southern added their second goal, making the score 9-2. Shea and Norman both added another goal in the final two minutes of the half pushing the  lead to 11-2.
 
After the break Kuys quickly added another goal, in the first minute of action. The game slowed down a bit after this goal. The next score was to the Panthers with 7:08 left in the quarter. Amber Lynch added a goal at the 4:05 mark with an assist from Shea. Hannah Fortin added the final goal of the third with 0:33 left in the quarter, propelling the score to 14-3.
 
The final quarter was the lowest scoring as the teams combined for only three scores. Barbieri added the first at the 12:33 mark, followed by a goal from Crystal Williams with an assist from Jenna Piazza with 5:43 to go. The final goal was scored by Birmingham Southern with under a minute to play, finalizing the score at 16-4.
 
The win gives UM them their second win in a row, improving their record to 4-3.
 
 

GAME NOTES

  • Montevallo outshot the Panthers 26-9

  • Ground balls proved to be a huge advantage for the Falcons as they won the battle 26-19.

  • The Falcons finished the game with seven less turnovers than Birmingham Southern.

  • The Falcons shared the wealth in this game as Withington, Barbieri, Kuys, Norman, and Shea all scored two goals

  • Ashley Shen caused a team high three turnovers.
