Emory, Va. – The No. 22 Montevallo men's wrestling team picked up a pair of impressive dual wins on the road, Wednesday, in Emory, Virginia.
The night began with a 46-9 win over Bluefield State, marking the most dual points scored this season which established a new-school record for the program in its inaugural season.
Following the win over BSU, the Falcons continued to dominate with their fourth win of the year, 40-3, over hosts Emory & Henry. The Falcons held the Wasps to just three points which marks the lowest point total scored against UM in a dual this season.
Montevallo is now 4-2 overall on the year, 3-2 in Conference Carolinas action, and 2-0 in the West Division.
Seven of Montevallo's nine competing wrestlers on the day earned wins in each match.
Mark Pennison and Trent Gilham each totaled the most points between the two matches for UM with 12 apiece. Gilham, a freshman from Springville, Alabama, recorded fall wins in both of his 149-bouts, Wednesday, and improved to 10-11 overall while tallying his third and fourth fall wins this year. Gilham earned his fall win against Bluefield State in just 29 seconds, surpassing his previous fastest-fall time of two minutes.
Pennison opened the match with a fall win in just 18 seconds for his fastest fall this season and additionally, the fastest by a Falcon so far, against Bluefield State. The Covington, Louisiana native picked up six more points on the evening with a win by forfeit against Emory & Henry.
Colt Brown earned two wins on the night to move into a tie for the team lead in wins with 17, while also adding his team-leading 10
th tech fall victory.
Aside from Pennison, Brown and Gilham, four other Falcons earned wins in both matches. Alabaster, Alabama native
Carson Freeman improved to 6-0 in dual matches with a forfeit win against Bluefield and a fall win against E&H.
Derek Hussey (14-5),
Jeffery Tubbs (15-8) and
Noah Todd (11-8) also joined the group of seven to record two wins, Wednesday.
Montevallo took a win in each of the opening matches in the duals. BSU jumped ahead of the Falcons briefly, 9-5, following the 133 and 141 weight classes, but Montevallo recorded four-straight six points wins to take an insurmountable lead, 29-9. A tech fall and three more six-point victory secured the first dual win of the evening, 46-9 for the Falcons.
In the final dual against Emory & Henry, Montevallo opened with five-straight wins and took a 24-0 lead. E&H picked up three points in the 174 match but Montevallo closed with two more tech falls and a forfeit win, winning 40-3.
