CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Montevallo men's soccer team fell to Delta State 3-0 on the road to conclude the regular season on Sunday.
Delta State struck early with a pair of early shots on goal in the seventh minute. The first attempt was saved by
Andre Etcheverry, but the second one would find its way in the net, putting the Statesmen up 1-0.
Montevallo began to attack, as
Cristobal Porter earned the first shot attempt for the Falcons in the 12
th minute and
Joshua Owens provided the first UM shot on goal in the 17
th minute. Delta State found its way back on the offensive, ultimately scoring a second goal in the 21
st minute to extend the DSU advantage to 2-0.
After both teams traded possessions through the rest of the half, action ramped up in the final minutes.
Dominic Kienzle fired a shot on goal in the 42
nd minute, but it was saved by the DSU keeper. The Statesmen responded with a shot on goal in the 43
rd minute, but Etcheverry recorded a save, denying Delta State a chance to extend its lead before the break.
Montevallo looked to respond in the second half as Kienzle and
Alex Errasti recorded early shots, but both were off target. Delta State recorded its first shot on goal of the half in the 66
th minute, but Etcheverry would come up with another save. The Statesmen were awarded a corner kick and ultimately found the back of the net a few seconds later, giving DSU a 3-0 lead.
Hugo Cakurda provided a shot on goal in the 84
th minute, but the Falcons could not get anything else going as Delta State took home the 3-0 victory.
