MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo wrestling team will travel to Pembroke, North Carolina for their first duals of the season on Wednesday, Nov. 6 as they take on Coker at 4:00 p.m. CT and No. 16 UNC Pembroke at 6:00 p.m. CT.
Last Time Out
The Falcons kicked off the 2024-25 season at the Pepsi Open where they secured 47 wins, 19 pins, eight placers and four top-three finishers. UM had 10 wrestlers earn four or more wins.
Carson Freeman led Montevallo with six wins including three tech falls, two pins and a medical forfeit.

Aiden Knight and
Noah Smith had five wins a piece.

About Montevallo
The wrestling team will open up their Conference Carolinas slate as they dual against teams they did not face last season. Montevallo will look to improve on their 4-5 conference record from a season ago.
Freshman
Nick Dempsey,
Cole Sykes and
Willie Cox had strong opening weekends for the Falcons as all three reached the championship bout in their respective weight classes. Dempsey racked up four wins on two major decisions, a. 11-5 decision and a fall in 4:57. In his first bout of his collegiate career,
Cole Sykes earned a pin in nine seconds. He won his next round in a 4-2 decision, then he earned his way to the freshman/sophomore 174 championship in overtime with a take down with eight seconds left. Cox picked up four wins by the way of a pin in 1:04, a 21-6 tech fall, a 12-8 decision and a forfeit.
Head Coach of the Falcons, Daniel Ownbey, will dual against UNC Pembroke for the first time at the helm of the Falcons. Ownbey graduated from UNCP in 2015 where he won two National Championships in the 141-weight class. He was a four-time All-American and was the school's first two-time champion.
Scouting Coker
The Cobras are coming off a 2023-24 season where they went 9-5 overall and 4-4 in Conference Carolina duals. In the first weekend of the new season, Coker competed at the Pembroke Open where they had four top-three placers including two champions.
In the 133-weight class, Stephen Spitko went 4-0 including three wins by tech fall. Spitko defeated UNC Pembroke's Chance Cottingham in an 11-1 major decision. Noah Korenoski won the 157-weight class as he picked up three wins in the afternoon. Korenoski pinned his first match up in 1:52, won by a 17-4 major decision and won the championship by decision 8-1.
Scouting No. 16 UNC Pembroke
The Braves of UNC Pembroke are coming off a season where they went 14-6 and 8-1 in Conference Carolinas duals. UNCP will feature six ranked wrestlers on theopenmat.com.
In the 133-weight class, Logan Robinson takes the 19
th spot. Avery Buonocore is 20
th for the 141-weight class. Jake Piccirilli is one of two wrestlers in the 2024-25 roster that is ranked inside the top-10. Keegan Roberson is the top ranked wrestler for the Braves as he is 4
th in the 157-weight division. Caleb Grau comes in ranked 17
th. The final ranked wrestler for UNCP is Oggie Atwood who is the 14
th wrestler in the 285 division.
