PARK CITY, Kan. – The University of Montevallo wrestling program continues to make history as 133-pounder
Gabe Hixenbaugh punched his ticket to the NCAA Division II National Semifinals, Friday evening.
Hixenbaugh defeated No. 9 ranked, and No. 8 seed Thierno Diallo of Frostburg State by a major decision 11-1, in the quarterfinals for his 29
th win of the year.
The graduate student wrestled methodically in the opening period and recorded a takedown toward the end to lead 3-0 after one. In the second, Hixenbaugh added his lone point on an escape, leading 4-0. In the final period, Hixenbaugh was aggressive with two more takedowns and earned a riding time point in the end. The only point given up was an escape in the final period.
With the win, Hixenbaugh punched his ticket to the semifinals, set for the Saturday session at 10 a.m.
In addition, the win makes Hixenbaugh the first-ever All-American in the history of the program.
The Alabaster, Alabama native is now 29-0 on the year with seven major decisions and 12 ranked wins.
Hixenbaugh will compete in the semifinals against No. 5 Reece Barnhardt of the University of Mary, Saturday, Mar. 16, at 10 a.m.
