BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Montevallo wrestling team capped a strong showing at the King Open on Sunday with eight total placers, highlighted by fourth-place finishes from Luke Berguson and Colt Brown.
Berguson led the way at 165, pinning fellow Falcon Ashton Freeman in 2:36 before adding a 9-3 decision over UNCP's Kody Sigmon to reach the third-place bout. Brown matched the fourth-place effort at 141 after securing a pair of wins.
At 141, Matt Velasco battled through a six-match day to finish fifth. Velasco opened with a pin over Austin High (Fairmont State) and a 14-1 major decision against Dylan Frazier before falling in sudden victory to Ashtan Hendricks (King). He rebounded with two decision wins and a tech fall to claim fifth place.
Sam Childs and Jordan Weltzin each earned sixth-place finishes, with Weltzin starting his tournament with a major and a tech fall.
At 197, Rhett Walters scored a 13-2 major decision over Jackson Pate (Fairmont State) to take seventh. Daniel McEntyre added another seventh-place result at 133 with a first-period pin of King's Andrew Garcia. Ashton Freeman closed the Falcon leaderboard with an eighth-place finish at 165.
