DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. – The Montevallo wrestling team continued its 2025-26 campaign on Saturday with a solid showing at the Lucha Open in Douglasville, Ga., placing five wrestlers across the Gold and Silver Divisions.
At 141 pounds in the Silver Division, Jordan Weltzin led the way with a runner-up finish after rattling off four straight victories. Weltzin opened with a decision over Campbellsville's Hunter Luttrell before pinning Logan Chornoby in 2:44. He followed with back-to-back decision wins against Life's Tristan Luna and Peyton Hoskins to secure second place.
In the 141-pound Gold Division, Matt Velasco battled to a seventh-place finish, going 4-2 on the day. Velasco started with decision wins over TJ Meyer (Campbellsville) and Logan Tortual (Mount Olive). After a setback in the quarterfinals, he rebounded with an 11-3 major decision over Joseph Hutchins (Southeastern) and closed the day with a 10-3 victory over Campbellsville's Shane Watson for seventh.
At 133 pounds in the Silver Division, Daniel McEntyre also grabbed seventh, highlighted by three wins via fall, with his fastest coming in just 1:46 against Georgetown's Richie Patanjo.
Chad Strickland added another seventh-place result for Montevallo in the 149-pound Silver Division, collecting five wins overall. Strickland posted decisions over Noah Gregory (Southeastern), Connor Metcalf (Campbellsville), Logan Robinson, and Christian Knuckles before finishing the day with a forfeit win to secure seventh.
Rounding out the Falcon placers was Nick Dempsey at 157 pounds in the Silver Division. The sophomore put together a strong performance, starting with an 11-2 major decision over Anthony Saget. He followed with a 17-2 tech fall over Shorter's Cumberland Kines in just 1:46 and another major decision at 16-7 against Brady Nardella (Huntingdon). Dempsey capped his day with a dominant 22-7 tech fall over Cumberlands' Nathan Marquez.
