MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Montevallo wrestling team returned to the mat Sunday at the Hawk Classic, hosted by Huntingdon, with several Falcons earning placements.
Matt Velasco posted a strong third-place finish at 141 pounds, recording four wins on the day. Velasco notched three victories by major decision, including a 10-2 win over Louis McHaffey of Montreat in the third-place match.
Ryder Gibson also earned a third-place finish at 149, rattling off six consecutive victories. Gibson picked up two wins by major decision and closed out the tournament with a dominant 22-6 technical fall over Lewis Miller.
At 285 pounds, Cole Carter placed fourth after winning five matches. Three of Carter's victories came by fall, highlighted by his fastest pin of the day at 1:13 against Slyder Sedlacek of McMurry.
Joey Stephens rounded out the placers with a sixth-place finish at 174. Stephens went 5-2 on the day with three major decision wins, including a 13-4 victory over Jack Caissie of UCF, before closing the tournament with a win by disqualification.
UP NEXT: Montevallo returns to Central State Bank Arena on Tuesday night for Senior Night and Pack the SAC against Emmanuel. First bout is set for 7:00 p.m.
