Falcons Clinch Playoff Berth With Comeback Win Over Union

Montevallo, Ala. –  The University of Montevallo men's soccer team overcame an early two-goal deficit to defeat Union University 4-2 on Saturday night at Varsity Field, scoring three second-half goals to secure a spot in the Gulf South Conference tournament.

Union struck first in the fifth minute when George McDonnell found the back of the net to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs kept the pressure on in the 35th minute as Ashanie Kennedy scored to put Montevallo in a 2-0 hole. The Falcons responded late in the first half when Ian Palma scored in the 41st minute, finishing a pass from Benjamin Williams to cut the deficit to 2-1 heading into halftime.

Montevallo carried that momentum into the second half, leveling the match just after the break. Luis Billep scored in the 47th minute off an assist from Viktor Willems to bring the Falcons even at 2-2. With the match tied, Montevallo continued to pressure the Union defense, creating opportunities as the half progressed, with both teams trading shots. The Falcons broke through in the 82nd minute when Juan Diego Alfaro scored off an assist from Joaquin Wladdimiro to give Montevallo its first lead of the night at 3-2.
