MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men's soccer team defeated Spring Hill 1-0 this afternoon in the final game of the regular season.
The Falcons and Badgers started fast as both teams looked to make their presence felt right away. Raphael Baier made a save against Spring Hill's Santiago Waites, who attempted a shot on goal toward the lower left corner. Montevallo responded with a shot of its own from Dylan Morman, but Badgers goalkeeper Jose Lozano Soto made the save to stop the attempt.
Spring Hill made a team save when Viktor Willem found a shooting opportunity near the lower center of the goal. Both teams tried to get on the scoreboard before halftime, but neither could find the back of the net, leaving the score tied 0-0 at the break.
Coming out of halftime, Montevallo went on the attack as Dakota Hart took a shot, but Spring Hill blocked his attempt. The second half mirrored the first, with neither team giving the other an inch.
The Falcons had their first opportunity to break the deadlock in the second half when Ian Palma took a penalty kick in the 68th minute, but Lozano Soto made another save to keep Montevallo off the scoreboard.
Just as the game appeared headed for a draw, the Falcons found their breakthrough late in the contest. Palma scored in the 88th minute, lifting Montevallo to a 1-0 victory with a shot into the upper center of the goal and ending the stalemate between the Falcons and Badgers.
