Ryan attended Oak Mountain High School where he lettered four times under Head Coach Jim Moore. Cox had times of 2:04 in the 800-meter, 4:40 in the 1600-meter and 17:02 in the mile. He graduated from Oak Mountain with a 4.06 GPA.
