University of Montevallo Athletics

Dr. Benton Tyler has served as the University of Montevallo’s Faculty Athletics Representative since January 2014.

In his role as Faculty Athletics Representative, Tyler serves as a liaison between Falcon Athletics, the university faculty, and campus administration while helping ensure Montevallo’s commitment to NCAA Division II academic and institutional standards. He is also a Professor of Mathematics and chair of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee.

Tyler joined the University of Montevallo faculty in 2005 after earning his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Delta State University and his Master of Science and Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Mississippi.

Since arriving at Montevallo, Tyler has been actively involved in university service through numerous committees and campus initiatives. He began serving on the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee in 2006 before later becoming chair. He has also served as president of the Faculty Senate and contributed to the development of the Computer Science major and the Game Studies and Design minor. Additionally, he serves as the faculty advisor for the Montevallo Organization of Gaming, a student organization.

Tyler’s research interests include combinatorics, graph theory, and game theory. He was also recognized as the winner of the Oar during the 12th annual Life Raft Debate.
