Falcons defeat UNC Pembroke 3-1 in conference match

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team defeated UNC Pembroke 3-1 in a Peach Belt Conference contest Oct. 11 at Trustmark Arena.

The Falcons took the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-17, before dropping the third set 17-25. Montevallo closed out the victory with a 25-17 win in the fourth set.

Senior Michelle Carle led Montevallo (12-5 overall, 5-3 in Peach Belt Conference) with 13 kills in the win.

Fellow senior Manyi Ati and sophomore Rebekah Phelps contributed 10 kills each. Ati added 10 digs as she posted her ninth double-double of the season, while Phelps finished the match with a .310 attack percentage.

Junior Katie Best chipped in nine kills in the victory.

Senior Kaleigh Harvey recorded a team-high 18 digs. Sophomore Anna Quinn registered 11 digs.

Freshman Hannah Christie posted a team-high 21 assists, while sophomore Briana Marquez contributed 18 assists off the bench.

Phelps recorded a pair of kills late in the first set to help the Falcons clinch a 25-21 win in the opening frame.

Montevallo ended the second set on a 5-0 run, capped with a kill by Carle, on its way to a 25-17 win in the set.

The Braves responded with a 25-17 win in the third set before the Falcons returned the favor in the fourth set.  Phelps and Carle contributed two kills each on a 4-1 run to end the set and helped Montevallo clinch the match with a 25-17 win in the frame.

The Falcons return to action Saturday, Oct. 12 with a tri-match at Trustmark Arena.

Montevallo will host Francis Marion in its Think Pink match at 12:30 p.m., which will feature the Falcons wearing commemorative pink uniforms in support of breast cancer research. The Falcons will close the tri-match at 4:30 p.m. with a non-conference contest against Southern Arkansas University.
