MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team handed Francis Marion University its first loss in Peach Belt Conference play Oct. 12 following a 3-1 win over the Patriots at Trustmark Arena in its annual Think Pink match supporting breast cancer research.
The Falcons, wearing commemorative pink uniforms, defeated the Patriots 25-11, 25-17, 18-25, 25-23.
Senior Manyi Ati led Montevallo (13-6) with 17 kills in the victory. Ati finished the match with a .484 attack percentage.
Sophomore Rebekah Phelps added 13 kills while recording a .419 attack percentage in the win. Phelps added 13 digs as she posted her third double-double of the season.
Senior Michelle Carle and junior Katie Best added eight kills each, while sophomore Anna Quinn finished with six kills. Quinn also posted 12 digs.
Senior Kaleigh Harvey led the Falcons with 23 digs. Freshman Hannah Christie led Montevallo with a career-high 35 assists. Sophomore Briana Marquez added 11 assists.
The Falcons fell to Southern Arkansas University 3-2 in a non-conference match later in the afternoon.
Montevallo took the first two games against the Muleriders 25-23 and 25-23 before dropping the final three sets, 21-25, 23-25, 8-15.
Ati led the Falcons with 15 kills. Carle added 14 kills, while Best finished with 13 kills while recording a .303 attack percentage.
Phelps contributed 11 kills and 15 digs as she posted her second consecutive double-double.
Harvey led the Falcons with 29 digs, while Quinn finished with 10 digs.
Christie eclipsed the career-high she sat against Francis Marion with a team-high 37 assists. Marquez added 19 assists.
The Falcons return to action Friday, Oct. 18 with a home match against GRU Augusta in Peach Belt Conference play. Montevallo swept the Jaguars 3-0 in the first meeting between the two teams this season.
