Montevallo falls in a close contest

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo men's soccer team came into Wednesday night's contest with Peach Belt foe Clayton State riding high after they were able to defeat the previously unbeaten Francis Marion squad just three days earlier. Both the Falcons and the Lakers played hard in a game that was scoreless for more than 70 minutes, but Clayton State eventually left Varsity Field as the winner, defeating Montevallo 2-0.

The first half did not yield any scores. Both teams were able to mount a little bit of pressure, but real scoring opportunities were rare in this defensive battle.

At 76:51, the scope of the game drastically changed when Clayton State's leading scorer, Alhagi Toure, was granted a penalty kick. Toure was able to bury the ball in the back corner of the net and give the Lakers the late 1-0 lead.

Soon after, Clayton State doubled their lead. Nikola Gazibara was the beneficiary of strong Clayton State pressure, as he was able to score a goal on a wide open net and put Montevallo in a 2-0 hole.

The Falcons had a big opportunity with just a few minutes left in the game to cut the lead to one, but Ricky Davey's penalty kick, along with the hope of mounting a comeback, was stopped by Nick Punter.

In all, Montevallo outshot ClaytonState ten to eight.  Montevallo also put six of those shots on net, while Clayton State only put four on goal.

The Falcons will be on the road Saturday, Oct. 5, where they will look to even up their record in Peach Belt play. They will take on Lander at 2:30 p.m.
