Montevallo extends winning streak to four after 4-0 win

SALISBURY, N.C. – The University of Montevallo men's soccer team was riding a hot streak going into their Tuesday afternoon matchup with the Catawba College Indians. The Falcons had won four of their past five matches, including three in a row, before they took their trip up to North Carolina. By the time the team boarded the bus back to Montevallo, they had extended their streak to four in a row, soundly defeating Catawba 4-0.

The first half was a defensive struggle. It looked as though the first 45 minutes would end with a scoreless tie, but at 41:15, Kevin Francis was able to put Montevallo on the board for a 1-0 lead. The unassisted tally was Francis' first of the season.

In the second half, the Falcons solidified their position in front when Ricky Davey scored on a penalty kick at 69:58. Davey's goal gave Montevallo a 2-0 lead.

The Falcons, and Davey, would not be done scoring for the day, though. Davey again would get on the board, this time on a header on a ball from Jeffrey Hessenberger.

In the final minutes, Steven Didik sealed the victory with his second goal of the season. This extended the Montevallo lead to 4-0, which would go on to be the final score.

Davey's big day gave him 13 points in his last four games. He also moved past Hessenberger for the team lead in points (19).

For the second straight game, Brendan Ledgeway recorded a shutout. Ledgeway only needed to make one save on the afternoon, as the Montevallo defense was stingy. While Catawba only managed one shot on goal, Montevallo recorded eight and outshot Catawba 14-7 overall.

Montevallo now has a winning record on the season and they have one final match before the Peach Belt Conference Tournament begins next Tuesday, November 5th. The final match of the regular season for the Falcons is this Saturday; they will travel to Young Harris to take on the Mountain Lions, who won the PBC regular season championship.
