SAVANNAH, Ga. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team fell on the road at undefeated and nationally-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University 3-0 in a Peach Belt Conference match Nov. 1.
The Falcons fell in straight sets, 25-23, 25-11, 25-23, against the Pirates, who entered the match ranked No. 19 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) NCAA Division II national poll and improved to 21-0 overall and 13-0 in Peach Belt Conference action.
Senior Manyi Ati led Montevallo (15-8 overall, 8-5 in Peach Belt Conference) with 12 kills while recording a .350 attack percentage in the match.
Fellow senior Michelle Carle, who posted a .450 attack percentage, and sophomore Rebekah Phelps added nine kills each. Phelps also recorded nine digs.
Sophomore Briana Marquez registered five digs to go along with a team-high 21 assists. Freshman Hannah Christie finished with 11 assists and three digs.
Senior Kaleigh Harvey finished with a team-high 17 digs.
Montevallo got off to an impressive start in the opening set, with a pair of kills by Ati and a trio of kills by Carle helping the Falcons build a 22-16 lead late in the frame. However, the Pirates closed the first set with a 9-1 run to clinch a 25-23 win in the set.
Phelps, Best and Ati opened the second set with a kill each to give Montevallo an early 3-2 lead in the set before the Pirates closed the frame with a 18-6 run to clinch a 25-11 win the set.
The Falcons took a 13-7 lead early in the third set following a service ace by Ati before the Pirates responded with a 9-3 run to even the score. Armstrong closed out a sweep in the match with a 25-23 win in the third and final set after ending the frame with a 3-0 run.
The Falcons return to action Saturday, Nov. 2 with a Peach Belt Conference match on the road at Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla.
