MONTEVALLO, Ala. – University of Montevallo junior Shykeem Jackson led the Falcons with 20 points in a 85-67 win over visiting University of West Alabama in a non-conference game Nov. 15 at Trustmark Arena.
Jackson finished 5-of-7 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, while knocking down all six attempts at the charity stripe in the victory.
The Falcons (2-0) shot 58 percent from the floor in the win, including 50 percent from beyond the arc.
Junior Ed'Lexus Collier added 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor. Senior Orlando Brazier contributed 12 points, while juniors Troran Brown and Da-Juan Cooper chipped in 10 points each. Brown finished with a game-high 11 assists, just one shy of his career high.
Junior Larry Slaughter finished with nine points and a game-high eight rebounds, while sophomore Kimani Key contributed eight points, five rebounds and five assists in the victory.
Desmond Raymond knocked down a 3-pointer less than two minutes into the game to give West Alabama a 6-3 lead, which would stand as the Tigers' largest lead.
A three-point play by Collier gave Montevallo its first double-digit lead of the contest with 5:33 remaining in the first half, which put the Falcons up 39-29.
Montevallo extended its lead to 49-35 heading into the locker room at halftime following a layup by Brazier with 36 seconds remaining in the half.
Brazier scored all 12 of his points in the opening half and led the Falcons in the scoring column at the break.
The Falcons pushed their lead to 54-37 following a 3-pointer by Jackson in the opening minute of the second half. West Alabama cut the Falcons' lead to 54-44 after a layup by Sandy Underwood with 14:59 remaining in the game.
Montevallo responded with a quick 11-1 run to push its lead to 65-45 with 11:28 left in the game following a 3-pointer by Jackson. The Tigers could only manage to trim the deficit to 11 points the rest of the way before a pair of free throws by Jackson with 1:20 left in the game gave Montevallo its largest lead, 85-64.
The Falcons return to action Thursday, Nov. 21 with a trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to take on Stillman College in a non-conference game.
Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
