FLORENCE, S.C. – Coming off their impressive performance in the quarterfinals of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament, the University of Montevallo volleyball team squared off with the top-seeded Armstrong Pirates in the semifinals. The Pirates were undefeated in the conference during the regular season and lived up to their top billing in this match, defeating the Falcons in three sets.
In the first set, Montevallo hung tough with Armstrong, but were unable to hold off the relentless Pirate attack. Armstrong went on to win 25-17.
The second set was similar to the first. The Falcons kept it close the entire set, but were unable to take control and eventually fell 25-20.
The Pirates were able to finish off the Falcons in the third set, winning 25-9 and advancing to the Peach Belt Conference Championship.
Armstrong won behind strong performances by their attackers. As a team, they hit .392. Freshman Emily Wylie led the team with 14 kills, while junior Stephanie Sfara and Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year Jessica Santaniello each had 11 kills.
Montevallo's attack was led by First Team All-Conference performer Manyi Ati. She had eight kills.
Sophomore Briana Marquez had 27 assists.
Senior Michelle Carle and sophomore Rebekah Phelps each added seven kills.
The University of Montevallo Falcons were ranked eighth in the latest Southeast Region rankings. The Falcons will learn their fate for postseason play this Monday, November 25th.
