Hot-shooting Falcons take down West Alabama, 68-53

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – University of Montevallo junior Troran Brown scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Falcons to a 68-53 win over the University of West Alabama on the road Nov. 27.

The Falcons, who are ranked No. 16 in the latest NABC Division II coaches poll, improved to 5-0 on the season after shooting a season-best 64.3 percent from the floor. Montevallo outrebounded the Tigers 33-22 in the win.

Brown finished 9-of-14 from the floor, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, while also recording a game-high five steals.

Juniors Shykeem Jackson and Darius Stowers added 11 points each. Jackson grabbed a career-best nine rebounds, while Stowers finished with a game-high four assists.

Junior Da-Juan Cooper added eight points and senior Orlando Brazier finished with seven points. Junior Ed'Lexus Collier contributed six points, while junior Larry Slaughter chipped in five points and eight rebounds.

The Falcons opened the game with a 6-0 run, capped with a layup by Brown with 17:44 remaining in the half.

A layup by Brown gave Montevallo a 23-14 lead with 8:26 left in the first half before the Tigers trimmed the deficit to five points following a layup by Sandy Underwood with 6:05 remaining.

Montevallo stretched the lead back to 31-22 following a 3-pointer by Jackson with 2:26 remaining in the half before carrying a seven-point lead into the locker room at halftime.

Brown went on a personal 5-0 run early in the second half with a 3-pointer and a breakaway dunk to give the Falcons their first double-digit lead, 45-34, with 15:45 remaining in the game.

The Falcons extended their lead to as many as 18 points in the second half following a fastbreak layup by Brown with 1:27 left in the game, which gave Montevallo a 68-50 advantage.

The Falcons return to action Tuesday, Dec. 3 with a home game against Stillman College.

Tip-off at Trustmark Arena is set for 7:30 p.m.
