GREENWOOD, S.C. – University of Montevallo junior Kyle Stuller fired a shot just over the fingertips of Lander University goalkeeper Barrett Nielsen and off the crossbar for a game-winning goal in the fifth minute of overtime to give the Falcons a 2-1 win over the Bearcats in a Peach Belt Conference tournament quarterfinal match Nov. 5.
Just outside the penalty arc, Stuller took a direct shot off a feed from senior Gary O'Neill following a free kick from freshman Jeffrey Hessenberger near midfield and fired the game-winner into the back of the net in the 95th minute to seal the win for the Falcons, keeping the hopes of capturing a second consecutive Peach Belt Conference tournament championship alive for Montevallo. The goal marked Stuller's second goal of the season.
Montevallo, the No. 7 seed in the conference tournament, advances to face No. 3 seed Flagler College after dispatching the second-seeded Bearcats. The Saints defeated No. 6 seed UNC Pembroke 1-0 in the quarterfinals.
The conference tournament semifinals will be held Friday, Nov. 8 at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga. The Falcons and the Saints match in the semifinals is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
Kevin Durand gave Lander a 1-0 advantage after finding the back of the net off a feed from Jose Cubillan in the 18th minute of the contest.
Senior Ricky Davey netted the equalizer for the Falcons in the 83rd minute to send the match into overtime. The goal marked Davey's team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Brendan Ledgeway recorded five saves while allowing just one goal in 95 minutes in the victory.
Lander outshot the Falcons 12-11, including a 6-3 edge in shot attempts on goal, in a battle between two evenly matched teams.
