MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Following a heartbreaking loss in their conference opener, the University of Montevallo women's basketball team hit the court Tuesday night looking to avenge that defeat, playing GRU Augusta in their Peach Belt home opener. Unfortunately for the Falcons, they were unable to beat the Jaguars and fell 65-60 in another close contest.

Montevallo had an early lead in the game. Carrington Caise put GRU Augusta in 15-8 hole when she converted a three-point play, sinking a mid-range jumper and nailing the free throw.

By the end of the first half, though, the Jaguars had gained the advantage. Taylor Beverly nearly had a double-double (12 points, 9 rebounds) in the first 20 minutes, but the Falcons still found themselves down 33-26 at halftime.

In the second half, Montevallo came storming back. They closed the gap and tied the game at 51 with 7:30 remaining in the game. Less than a minute later, a jumper from Kaylin Foreman gave Montevallo the lead. 

The two teams went back and forth the rest of the way, but the Jaguars were able to pull away at the end and won the game 65-60.

Montevallo had a good game at the free throw line, making 23 of their 31 attempts. However, they were only able to make 1 of their 16 shots from behind the three-point line, while GRU Augusta connected on 5 of their 15 long range shots. 

The Falcons out-rebounded the Jaguars 49-33.

Beverly, a junior from Brandon, Mississippi, recorded her seventh double-double of the season. She led the team in both points (21) and rebounds (15) and hit all five of her free throw attempts.

Senior Shay Bonner extended her conference lead in steals, creating six turnovers.

Montevallo (3-6, 0-2) will play their final game before the holiday break this Saturday, December 21st. The Falcons will travel to St. Augustine, Florida to take on the Flagler Saints. Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
