Montevallo defeated in home opener 4-1

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The women's soccer team had their home opener on Friday night. In front of a large crowd, the team played hard, but ultimately fell to the West Alabama Tigers by the score of 4-1.

To start the match, Montevallo was in complete control. They registered multiple shots, while West Alabama struggled to even keep the ball in bounds. However, that all changed at 21:35 when Natalie Perry was on a break and took advantage of an aggressive Montevallo defense to score on the wide open net, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

The Falcons quickly answered, though, as Jade Pennock took a beautifully placed ball from Paige Scott and put it in the back of the net to even the score at one. The sequence started with a great ball from Emma Greenwood that nearly went the length of the pitch. The score of 1-1 would hold up until halftime.

The second half started strong for Montevallo, as they recorded two shots on goal in just the first six minutes. Quickly, though, West Alabama flipped the momentum around with a goal from Nicki Gears, who scored on a breakaway goal that was nearly offsides.

Soon after the Tigers' second goal, they were able to add a third one. The Tigers were able to create pressure and eventually Lydia Sutcliffe found herself with no defenders between her and Kerr, and Sutcliffe was able to capitalize.

Montevallo's fate was sealed when Kerr was assessed a yellow card and Perry registered her second goal of the game on a penalty kick. West Alabama would go on to win the game by the score of 4-1.

The University of Montevallo women's soccer team is back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 17, when they travel to Huntsville to take on UAH.
