MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team fell to host Georgia College 3-2 in its Peach Belt Conference opener Sept. 13.
The Falcons dropped the opening set 25-21 before rallying to take the next two sets, 25-18 and 25-19. However, the Bobcats rallied to take the final two sets, 25-19 and 15-13.
Sophomore Rebekah Phelps led Montevallo (3-2 overall, 0-1 in Peach Belt Conference) with a career-high 17 kills. Phelps also added 11 digs as she posted her second double-double of the season.
Seniors Manyi Ati and Michelle Carle, who recorded a team-high six blocks, added 14 kills each. Juniors Sarah Guidry, who registered 13 digs, and Katie Best chipped in five kills each.
Sophomore Briana Marquez, who registered four kills, added 11 digs to go along with a team-high 35 assists as she posted her first double-double of the season.
Senior Kaleigh Harvey led the Falcons with 30 digs, while sophomore Carissa Bell added 17 digs.
Montevallo began the opening set with a 8-4 run, but the Bobcats closed the set with a 6-2 run, capped with a kill by Rachel Reynolds, to capture a 25-21 win in the frame. Reynolds led the Bobcats with a match-high 26 kills.
The Falcons rallied to take the second set 25-18, with Phelps providing a pair of kills in a 3-0 run by Montevallo to end the set.
The Falcons ended the third set with a 7-3 run to close out a 25-19 win in the set, with Phelps beginning the run with a kill and ending the frame with a kill.
Georgia College captured the fourth set 25-19 and survived a back-and-forth battle in the final set, 15-13, to clinch the match 3-2.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Sept. 14 with a pair of matches. Montevallo will take on GRU Augusta in another Peach Belt Conference match at noon, followed by a non-conference match at 2 p.m. against Pfeiffer University in Augusta, Ga.
