MONTEVALLO, Ala. – University of Montevallo senior Orlando Brazier recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds as he led the Falcons to a 61-59 win over visiting Georgia Southwestern in a Peach Belt Conference contest Jan. 15 at Trustmark Arena.
Brazier finished 6-of-12 from the floor in the victory for the Falcons, who are ranked No. 21 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) NCAA Division II poll. Montevallo improved to 12-2 overall and 5-2 in Peach Belt Conference play following the win.
Junior Troran Brown added 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor. Junior Ryan May added nine points, while fellow junior Larry Slaughter finished with eight points and six rebounds.
Junior Shykeem Jackson contributed seven points, while fellow junior Darius Stowers finished with a career-high six assists in the win.
A layup by Brazier with 3:34 remaining in the first half gave the Falcons a 22-16 lead, their largest in the opening half.
Jackson knocked down a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining to send Montevallo into the locker room at halftime with a 27-25 lead.
A layup by May with 13:08 left in the game gave the Falcons a 39-31 advantage before 11-3 run by the Hurricanes tied the game at 42-42 with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Georgia Southwestern took a 48-46 lead following a pair of free throws by Jamon Hawkins with 6:09 left in the game, but it would be the last time the Hurricanes led in the contest. A layup by Brown with 1:54 remaining capped a 10-2 run by the Falcons and gave Montevallo a six-point cushion down the stretch.
The Hurricanes cut the Falcons' lead to 59-58 following a 3-pointer by Johathan Brooks, but Jackson stepped to the line and drained a pair of free throws to help Montevallo hold off Georgia Southwestern in the final seconds.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Jan. 18 with a Peach Belt Conference contest on the road at Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C.
