PEMBROKE, N.C. - Coming off two wins in their last three conference games, the University of Montevallo women's basketball team defeated the UNC Pembroke Braves by the final score of 62-59.
The Falcons opened the game with a 7-0 run. The hot start included a three from Jacquelyn Thompson and a steal from Shay Bonner that led to an uncontested layup.
UNC Pembroke came storming back, though, and led by six at halftime. The key to the Pembroke attack was their three-point shooting. The Braves shot 46.2% from long range on 6 of 13 shooting.
In the second half, Montevallo came out with the same intensity they started the game with and earned similar results. Coming out of the locker rooms, the Falcons went on a quick 11-2 run that gave them a 33-30 lead early in the second half.
The Braves stayed within striking distance the rest of the way and had an opportunity to tie up the game as time wound down. However, strong Falcon defense prevented an open look for the Braves, and Montevallo left Pembroke with yet another Peach Belt victory.
Conference scoring leader Taylor Beverly led the way for the Falcons. She recorded her 11th double-double of the season, scoring 20 points and recording 11 rebounds.
Katie Colson proved to be a solid complement to Beverly down low, scoring 8 points and grabbing 7 boards in 36 minutes.
Bonner finished the game with 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals.
Thompson chipped in seven points.
Montevallo will continue their road trip this Saturday, January 25th, when they travel to Savannah, Ga. to take on the Armstrong Pirates.
Tip-off is set for 12:30 p.m.
