PEMBROKE, N.C. – University of Montevallo senior Orlando Brazier and junior Troran Brown led the nationally-ranked Falcons with 16 points each in a 88-61 win on the road at UNC Pembroke in a Peach Belt Conference contest Jan. 20 at the English E. Jones Center.
Brazier, who finished 7-of-10 from the floor, also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds as he posted his fifth double-double of the season. Brown, who shot 6-of-11 from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, dished out a game-high eight assists.
The Falcons, who are ranked No. 21 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) NCAA Division II poll, shot 54.7 percent from the floor, 55.6 percent from beyond the arc and 88.9 percent at the charity stripe in the victory. Montevallo improved to 14-2 overall and 7-2 in conference play with the win.
Junior Ryan May added 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Fellow junior Ed'Lexus Collier contributed nine points off the bench, while senior Silas Mills chipped in eight points. Juniors Larry Slaughter, Da-Juan Cooper and Shykeem Jackson finished with six points each.
The Falcons opened the game with a 20-7 run, capped with a 3-pointer by Jackson with 14:26 remaining in the half. May knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:08 left, which gave the Falcons a 46-25 lead, their largest in the opening half.
UNC Pembroke closed the half with a 4-0 run following a pair of free throws by Reggie Cobia and a layup by Keysheen Hinton to trim the Falcons' lead to 46-29 heading into the locker room at halftime.
A layup by Brandon Winford to open the second half trimmed the deficit to 46-31 before a layup and a 3-pointer by May pushed the Falcons' lead back to 20 points. Montevallo led by 20 points or more for the remainder of the second half, with
