MORROW, Ga. – After earning two ties in their first two conference matches of the year, the University of Montevallo men's soccer team was looking for their first PBC win of 2014 when they traveled to Morrow, Ga. to take on Clayton State. The Lakers held the edge at halftime, but two impressive goals in the second half propelled the Falcons to the 2-1 victory.
Montevallo had the majority of the early attacks, but the Lakers were first to get on the board. Clayton State's leading scorer, Avery Shepard, was able to navigate through the defense and put one in the back of the net less than 10 minutes into the match.
The goal was Shepard's sixth of the year.
The 1-0 lead for the home team would last for the remainder of the half. After one half of play, Montevallo was able to put six shots on goal, but none made their way past Laker keeper Nick Punter.
In the second half, the Falcons did not wait long to tie the game, drawing even at 56:10. Steven Didik put the ball in the upper right corner for his second goal of the year. Didik scored the lone goal in Montevallo's last game, a tie with Francis Marion.
Ram Gilad headed the ball out to Didik and earned the assist on the goal, but it would not be the last time that Gilad would put his name in the box score.
Gilad netted the game-winning goal at 72:15 after a give and go with freshman Ahmet Brown. It was Gilad's second goal of the year. He now has six points this season, which is third most on the team.
Clayton State kept pushing until the final horn, but was unable to sneak another ball past Yannic Horn. Horn had seven saves for the Falcons, including a one-handed diving stop that, at the time, kept the game tied.
Montevallo (4-3-1) returns home this weekend to take on the Lander Bearcats. Last season, the Falcons upset the Bearcats in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament in overtime.
That match will start at approximately 3:30 p.m.
