PEMBROKE, N.C. – Four players finished with double-digit kills to lead the University of Montevallo volleyball team to a 3-1 win on the road at UNC Pembroke in a Peach Belt Conference contest Oct. 10.
The Falcons defeated the Braves 23-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-21 in four sets.
Senior Katie Best and freshman Kristy Bohan paced the Falcons with 12 kills each. Juniors Rebekah Phelps and Briana Marquez contributed 11 kills and 10 kills, respectively.
Phelps registered 15 digs to post her eighth double-double of the season. Marquez nearly registered her first ever triple-double after finishing with a team-high 39 assists to go along with eight digs, which marked her 10th double-double of the year.
Senior Sarah Guidry added five kills, while sophomore Chandler Cooper contributed three kills.
Junior Carissa Bell led Montevallo (13-7 overall, 5-3 in Peach Belt Conference) with 29 digs in the victory.
The Falcons dropped the opening set against the Braves, 25-23. Neither team led by more than three points during the entire frame, with UNC Pembroke breaking a 18-18 tie with a 7-5 run to end the set.
Phelps and Marquez led the Falcons with four kills each in the set.
Montevallo bounced back with a 25-21 win in the second set. A service ace by Marquez capped a 8-5 run midway through the set and gave the Falcons a 16-10 lead. The Braves trimmed the deficit to 16-15 with a 5-0 run before the Falcons were able to put UNC Pembroke away in the frame with a 9-6 run, securing the win in the set following back-to-back attack errors by the Braves.
Bohan paced Montevallo with four kills in the frame.
The Falcons took the third set with a 25-14 win over the Braves. Montevallo opened the frame with a 6-2 run, capped with a kill by Phelps. The Falcons ended the frame with an impressive 18-8 run, capped with a set-clinching kill by Best.
Best led the Falcons with four kills in the set.
Montevallo closed out the match with a 25-21 win in the fourth set. The Falcons used a 6-0 run midway through the frame to turn a two-point deficit into a 16-12 advantage. UNC Pembroke managed to cut the deficit to 23-21 late in the set before back-to-back kills by Marquez and Cooper secured 25-21 win by the Falcons in the set.
Phelps paced Montevallo with four kills in the set.
Nicole Mathews led UNC Pembroke with 17 kills in the match.
Montevallo will return to action Saturday, Oct. 11 with a Peach Belt Conference match against Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C.
