FLORENCE, S.C. – University of Montevallo junior Rebekah Phelps registered her ninth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 10 digs in a 3-1 win on the road at Francis Marion University in a Peach Belt Conference contest Oct. 11.
The Falcons defeated the Patriots 25-22, 18-25, 25-15, 25-15 in four sets.
Sophomore Chandler Cooper also recorded 11 kills for Montevallo, which improved to 14-7 overall and 6-3 in Peach Belt Conference play.
Freshman Kristy Bohan added 10 kills, while seniors Katie Best and Sarah Guidry each chipped in nine kills. Guidry also finished with a team-best .467 hitting percentage.
Junior Briana Marquez posted a team-high 40 assists to go along with nine digs. Fellow junior Carissa Bell paced the Falcons with 12 digs in the win.
The Falcons opened the match with a 25-22 win in the first set. Montevallo recovered from a 4-1 deficit in the early stages of the frame, using a 5-0 run sparked with three consecutive kills by Phelps to take its first lead in the set at 6-4 following a service ace by Bell. The Falcons didn't relinquish the lead down the stretch in the opening set.
Phelps led Montevallo with five kills in the opening set.
Francis Marion responded with a 25-18 win in the second set. The Patriots used a 6-0 run midway through the frame, turning a one-point lead into a 19-12 advantage. Francis Marion led by as many as nine points down the stretch following a kill by Alexzandra Reed, which gave the Patriots a 24-15 advantage late in the set.
Cooper paced the Falcons with four kills in the second set.
Montevallo took the third set against the Patriots, 25-15. The Falcons opened the frame with a 7-4 run, capped with a kill by Phelps. A 7-0 run midway through the set, fueled with a pair of kills by Best, and a 5-0 run to end the set, capped with a set-clinching kill by Guidry, helped Montevallo coast to victory.
Guidry led the Falcons with four kills in the third set.
Montevallo clinched the match with a 25-15 win in the fourth set. The Falcons stormed out to a 7-2 lead following a kill by Best and held the lead throughout the remainder of the set.
The Falcons will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 14 with a Peach Belt Conference match against Georgia College.
