Montevallo volleyball drops conference match against Cougars, 3-1

COLUMBUS, Ga. – University of Montevallo senior Katie Best and junior Rebekah Phelps finished with 11 kills each as the Falcons fell to host Columbus State University 3-1 in a Peach Belt Conference match Oct. 7.

The Falcons fell to the Cougars 25-20, 24-26, 25-16, 25-20 in four sets, dropping to 12-7 overall and 4-3 in Peach Belt Conference play.

Freshman Kristy Bohan added 10 kills, while senior Sarah Guidry and sophomore Chandler Cooper contributed six kills each.

Junior Briana Marquez, who registered a double-double with a team-high 36 assists to go along with 10 digs, finished with two kills.

Junior Carissa Bell, who currently leads the Peach Belt Conference with 384 total digs, recorded a career-high 32 digs in the match. Fellow junior Nicole Holton added 11 digs.

Columbus State took the opening set, 25-20. The Cougars opened the set with a 7-2 run, capped with back-to-back service aces by Megan Frame. Montevallo trimmed the deficit to 12-11 midway through the frame before a 5-0 run by the Cougars allowed the hosts to secure the win in the opening set.

The Falcons responded with a 26-24 win in the second set. Columbus State jumped out to an 8-5 advantage, but the Falcons used a 3-0 run to tie the set at 8-8. Neither team led by more than two points down the stretch, with the Falcons taking advantage of back-to-back attack errors by the Cougars to end the frame with a 4-0 run and claim the second set.

Columbus State rallied to pick up a 25-16 win in the third set. The Cougars opened the frame with a 7-0 run and led by double-digits early in the set on their way to taking a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Cougars closed out the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set. Columbus State opened the frame with a 7-3 run and led by as many as eight points before Montevallo closed the deficit to 18-15 following a kill by Best and an attack error by the Cougars.

However, Columbus State was able to hold off the Falcons and claim the final set to secure the 3-1 win in the match.

The Falcons will return to action Friday, Oct. 10 with a Peach Belt Conference match on the road at UNC Pembroke in Pembroke, N.C.

First serve is set for 6 p.m. Eastern/5 p.m. Central.
