GREENWOOD, S.C. – University of Montevallo junior Rebekah Phelps and freshman Kristy Bohan led the Falcons with 19 kills each in a 3-2 win on the road at Lander University in a Peach Belt Conference match Nov. 1 featuring a pair of ranked teams in the NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings.
The Falcons, who entered the match ranked No. 7 in the region, defeated the No. 8 Bearcats 25-22, 19-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-9 in the five-set match. Montevallo scored the final seven points in the final set to clinch the match, with Bohan contributing one solo block while assisting Phelps on two other blocks to help the Falcons secure the victory.
Phelps, who led Montevallo (18-10 overall, 9-6 in Peach Belt Conference) with a .447 hitting percentage, added 15 digs as she posted her 12th double-double of the year.
Senior Katie Best added 16 kills. Fellow senior Sarah Guidry, who finished with 17 digs, contributed nine kills and junior Nicole Holton finished with eight kills and 15 digs in the victory.
Freshman Hannah Christie contributed a team-high 46 assists to go along with 12 digs as she posted her third double-double of the season. Junior Briana Marquez finished with 26 assists and eight digs.
Junior Carissa Bell posted a career-high 34 digs in the victory.
Montevallo captured a 25-22 win in the opening set after closing out the frame with a 10-7 run, capped with a set-clinching kill by sophomore Chandler Cooper.
After the Bearcats took the second set 25-19 and the third set 25-22, the Falcons rallied with a 25-23 win in the fourth set. Montevallo closed the set with a 5-3 run, capped with a set-clinching kill by Best.
Bohan and Phelps took over down the stretch in the Falcons' 15-9 win over the Bearcats in the fifth set, capping the match with a block.
The Falcons will return to action Tuesday, Nov. 4 with a Peach Belt Conference match against Columbus State University.
