Falcons close out regular season with 3-2 win over UNC Pembroke

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - University of Montevallo freshman Kristy Bohan registered a team-high 16 kills and seven blocks while leading the Falcons to their 20th win of the season in a 3-2 win over visiting UNC Pembroke in a Peach Belt Conference contest Nov. 8.

Montevallo topped the Braves 25-22, 23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-9 to earn its 20th victory, which marks back-to-back 20-win seasons for the Falcons, who are ranked No. 10 in the latest NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings.

The Falcons (20-11 overall, 11-7 in Peach Belt Conference) have earned the No. 4 seed in the Peach Belt Conference tournament and will return to action Tuesday, Nov. 11 with a home match against No. 5 seed Columbus State University at Trustmark Arena in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.

First serve is set for 7 p.m.

The Falcons, who dropped both regular season meetings against the Cougars, have advanced to the Peach Belt Conference tournament semifinals in two of the past four seasons.

Sophomore Chandler Cooper added 15 kills and senior Katie Best contributed 14 kills and eight digs in the win over the Braves. Junior Rebekah Phelps posted seven kills, while senior Sarah Guidry recorded five kills and eight digs.

Junior Briana Marquez finished with a team-high 50 assists to go along with seven digs. Junior Carissa Bell paced the Falcons with 19 digs, while freshman Grace Harris compiled 16 digs and junior Nicole Gibson contributed 10 digs.

The Falcons closed out the opening set with a 4-0 run, capped with a service ace by Guidry, to secure a 25-22 win in the frame.

After dropping both the second set and the third set by identical 25-23 scores, the Falcons went on a dominating 10-0 run midway through the fourth set with junior Nicole Holton serving. Cooper registered four kills during the run, which helped Montevallo secure a 25-16 win in the set.

Montevallo clinched the victory with a 15-9 win in the fifth and final set, ending the frame on a 7-0 run. Bohan recorded three kills during the stretch before Cooper registered the match-clinching kill.

The Falcons celebrated the careers of Best and Guidry before the match. The pair of seniors have amassed 50 victories with the Falcons and have helped the team advance to the Peach Belt Conference tournament in each year of their collegiate careers.
